Her perspective on regenerative travel

“”You don’t build a building. You build capability in people who then align with the potential of place.””

On the credibility gap

“”Regeneration is about building a field of energy, and that’s a much better attractor than a checklist.””

What she looks for

“Reed is wary of anything that works as marketing dressed up as verification — badges and checklists that let a place signal virtue without ever doing the harder work of building a real relationship with it. What he actually looks for is depth over performance: not green features bolted onto business as usual, but evidence that a place has taken the time to understand its own ecology, history and community before designing anything at all. He’s also looking for capability rather than compliance — whether the people behind a project are building a lasting capacity to read and respond to their own living systems, instead of just clearing a bar once to earn a label. Just as important to him is whether an operator can tell a genuine story of place: what this specific piece of land, with its own ecological and cultural patterns, is actually trying to become, rather than a sustainability narrative that could be copied and pasted onto any destination. He values honesty about the gap between ambition and current practice more than polish, and above all he wants to see data and claims that can actually hold up to scrutiny. That’s the line he draws between something built for real credibility, like Veriva, and the platforms that function more as marketing wearing the language of sustainability. “

Four questions from Veriva

1

Honest View

What makes a place regenerative rather than merely sustainable?

“Regeneration is about recovering and ongoing adaptation of the self-organizing capacity of living systems. This requires human beings to take on the role of consciously engaging with the evolutionary processes of life. It requires paying attention to the diversity of species and diversity of relationships that build ecological diversity. And, by ‘ecological,’ we mean the whole system, the energies, and consciousness of life in each place we live. This can be summarized: regeneration is a continuously engaged process of co-evolution – birth, life, death, and rebirth. “

A reason for hope

When someone tells you a place is doing good work — what makes you believe them, and what makes you doubt?

“I look and feel for the energy and coherence in a place; for people being in purposeful engagement. They have a greater aim that they are serving (an aim might be people intentionally engaged in a thriving and flourishing ecosystem). What ultimately gets measured is an ongoing increase and/or resiliency in diversity – in humans and other-than-human life.”

The honest critique

What does the travel industry need to stop doing — including your own part of it?

“The travel industry needs to stop being an industry and instead support the unique attributes and essence of every place. My particular hypocrisy is working to build socioecological communities in places other than my own. “

I look and feel for the energy and coherence in a place; for people being in purposeful engagement.

The one place

Name one place that changed how you think about travel. What happened there?

“Working on the Playa Viva project in Juluchuca, Mexico. We fell in love with the village. The client and we saw that the village was the core experience and value to the system of life there. The resort needed to honor and support and be supported by that relationship. “
